Humble beginnings
In 1987 The Lehman Center opened its doors. At that time, child abuse was the second leading cause of death for young children in York County and The Lehman Center’s goal was to help make that statistic a thing of the past. Child abuse is still significant in York County, but thankfully it is no longer a leading cause of death for children. The Lehman Center is one of Children’s Aid Society’s four centers and is home to one of only three crisis nurseries in the state of Pennsylvania. The Crisis Nursery provides a loving, safe place for young children to stay when their parents require temporary respite and need help in caring for their child. The Lehman Center also has art and play therapy to help children recover from abuse or trauma and learn how to cope with life’s challenges in positive ways. Parents also get help by participating in Parent Support Groups and working with our Family Advocate to learn valuable Parenting skills for the Children once they leave the facility.
Cornerstone Youth Home was established April 2021 to supply respite care for youth experiencing homelessness. Displacement and uncertainty are the "norm" for too many of our students and their families and it impacts our entire community. Cornerstone Youth Home provides long-term, stable hosing to the children while working with their families to resolve issues surrounding education, employment, health and housing.
The funds raised at Give Local York make it possible for us to help all children who come to us for help, even those whose families cannot pay anything for the help they need. The families we help live are experiencing economic hardships and they face challenges to provide for their children. Thank you for helping to ensure that all children are safe and feel loved!
In 1913, Children’s Aid Society (CAS) was organized at the home of Sudie Mae Wingert of Waynesboro as an outreach of the Southern Pennsylvania District Church of the Brethren that promoted rescuing neglected, dependent and orphaned children. Soon thereafter, CAS began offering foster care services and opened a children’s home in Carlisle, PA. As times and society’s perception of orphanages changed, Children’s Aid Society adapted its focus to concentrate on meeting the emotional needs of children as well as their immediate physical needs. Through the dedication and contributions of many loyal supporters, especially devoted people of faith, Children’s Aid Society has been able to open and operate three centers that address child welfare and child-parent relationships.
