Friends & Neighbors coordinated street outreach program builds relationships with and provides services to our unsheltered neighbors in York city/county. Depending on the need, specific services may include physically guiding a service recipient to shelter, helping to make phone calls for benefits and other connections, providing bus passes for transportation around town and to a safe place outside of York. We also provide supplies and survival gear to those who choose to remain outdoors, or to those who cannot access shelter space for various reasons. With each engagement, advocates build trusting and respectful relationships with our neighbors and are able to gain a deeper understanding of the underlying circumstances that have led to their current situation. This often allows advocates to suggest and coordinate additional opportunities through the collaborative network of service providers.
Additionally we have "The Beacon", a day shelter/resource center that we staff and operate as part of the continuum of care friends and neighbors provides. The Beacon is open four days a week to those neighbors who need to meet with service providers, receive mail, take a nap, get hot/cold drinks, see our advocates or even get a haircut! We don't just call ourselves Friends & Neighbors, we live it.
