In 2012, St Matthew Lutheran Church volunteers took the lead in organizing and gathering volunteers and funds to hold a biennial Meal Packing Event in conjunction with our partner Rise Against Hunger (initially, Stop Hunger Now), a global hunger abatement initiative. Due to the overwhelming success of those events, Hanover Against Hunger was created as an independent 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.
During our most recent event, we loaded a sea container with 201,730 meals packed by over 750 community volunteers. When we were finished, the container was trucked to the Port of New York and shipped to the Philippines. To date, in our five biennial events, our efforts have resulted in preparing 503,404 meals involving over 2,100 local volunteers. In addition to the Philippines, meals have been sent to Columbia, Malawi, Burundi, Liberia, Zambia and Haiti.
Countless lives have been changed by the availability of nutritious daily meals. We have held these packing events every other year since 2012 in October or November, with our next event scheduled for November 1, 2025.
In addition to helping to meet the needs of a global community to address food insecurities, there is a definite added benefit to our local community as well. Our events help bring our community together in a true spirit of cooperation. Participants are educated about the challenge of meeting the needs of the hungry around the world and connecting them in a very real way to the global community. Everyone involved is reminded of the needs which go far beyond our immediate neighborhoods and are given the opportunity to help others around the world. The hands that pack the meals at our events are the last hands to touch the food before it is served to those in need.
However, hunger knows no geographical boundaries. Although Hanover Against Hunger has in the past focused on international needs, we have chosen to expand our mission by helping to meet those needs closer to home. As a result, we have begun to partner with local food pantries/emergency food providers/weekend and feeding programs to support their efforts by collecting donations on their behalf, educating the public of their programs and/or promoting local food drives and more. We are committed to continuing our fundraising in support of our Meal Packing Events, but we will now be allocating an additional portion of funds raised to local nonprofits who share in our mission to feed the hungry.
In order to accomplish our work over the years, Hanover Against Hunger has raised over $160,000 to meet the challenge.
