Penn-Mar Human Services supports people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. We do this with the help of our amazing Direct Support Professionals (DSP). DSPs provide individualized supports for people with disabilities, their work varies depending on the needs and wants of the person being supported.
What do DSPs provide for the people they support?
• Education
• Home care
• Basic health and hygiene
• Medications
• Transportation
• Housing
• Family services
• Vocational training
• Rehabilitation
• Integrating into their local community
Now more than ever, DSPs – the people who, outside of family, are the most important person in the life of someone with a disability – are called upon to support those people through crisis.
Just like doctors, nurses, pharmacists, grocers, truck drivers, government officials, and other critical workers, DSPs are on the front lines fighting COVID-19 and caring for a particularly vulnerable community.
Consider donating to our Team Member Care Fund, if you are able. Due to the temporary closing of our Day Program, many of our DSPs are out of work. As a workforce that is already significantly underpaid (due to government funding, not by Penn-Mar's choice!) many live paycheck-to-paycheck. Being out of work exacerbates this issue. Additionally, school closures have caused DSPs to incur unanticipated childcare costs.
As you can imagine, the Team Member Care Fund is in high demand. As you can imagine, the Team Member Care Fund is in high demand. Your donation will help provide emergency financial relief for DSPs. Depending on the circumstances sometimes the Care Fund money is being used for other kinds of DSP supports, too.
Thank you for your support!
