SGAHPS is a private 501(c)3 charitable non-profit organization led by a Board of Directors, currently consisting of 11 persons. The SGAHPS was organized to oversee and maintain the artifacts collected during the town of Spring Grove’s Centennial celebration in 1982 and was officially incorporated in 1986. The mission of SGAHPS is to provide a historical legacy for this and future generations of Spring Grove Area residents. Spring Grove Area Historical Preservation Society is located in Spring Grove, York County, Pennsylvania. We service the townships of Heidelberg, Jackson, North Codorus, and Paradise; also, the boroughs of Jefferson, New Salem, Seven Valleys, and Spring Grove; located in south-central Pennsylvania in York County. The area covers approximately 92 square miles.

How we do this:

We educate! Through community presentations and onsite educational programs.  Also in 2023, the society expanded its programs into the public school district.  Our oral history program, “In Their Words”, has been added as an activity by English teachers for 9th and 11th grade honors English. We work with the classes to train students in the best practices of creating digital histories.

We collaborate! We work with the Borough of Spring Grove on projects such as community events, the green space initiative, a historic themed pocket park, and the 250th America upcoming events.

We preserve! Our collection has over 10,000 artifacts including land instruments including surveys and deeds from the 18th century; textiles including military uniforms, Victorian wedding gowns; letters, photos, correspondence; toys, home goods, business accoutrements; architectural items including the 1890 cupola from the original firehouse; collection of photographs from the Glatfelter Paper Company spanning the years 1930-1960’s used in their monthly publications; paintings from local artists.

Donations this Give Local York will be used for design/fabrication/installation costs of our new Museum.  We are preserving the 1898 Spring Grove Public School Building and moving our collection into curated galleries designed to educate and entertain visitors with the history and unique character of the Spring Grove Area!

We resolve to provide a historical legacy for this and future generations of Spring Grove Area residents.
