Since opening the historic Mifflin Farm to the public in May, we have helped more than a thousand visitors discover the courage of freedom seekers escaping the brutality of slavery. We shared stories about the Quaker conscience that drove people to open their homes to these refugees. And we illustrated how Black and white people in the Susquehanna Valley collaborated to support the Underground Railroad. One visitor told us, “I appreciate the efforts of those in the present who are actively preserving the past. Your passion for telling and preserving the story are honorable.” And this is only the beginning.

Our “Lecture on the Lawn” series offers intimate connections between the landscape and the lives it changed. We draw upon first-hand accounts of people fleeing bondage, soldiers fighting for freedom and even veterans’ speeches to show how the burning of the Columbia-Wrightsville Bridge was viewed in the context of the Gettysburg campaign. 

Beyond the Mifflin Farm our educational programs on both sides of the Susquehanna introduce students to the rich science, history and recreational opportunities bestowed by this magnificent river.

Susquehanna National Heritage Area supports regional initiatives to save and enhance important and iconic river landscapes for public use and benefit:

• As a member of the Susquehanna Riverlands Conservation Landscape Leadership Team we help identify land preservation priorities and support acquisition efforts along the river.
• Through the Chesapeake Conservation Partnership we help guide efforts to conserve culturally and ecologically important landscapes in the six ­state Chesapeake watershed.
• With local and state partners we helped save over 300 acres of scenic and historic riverlands as public parks and preserves, including Highpoint Scenic Vista and Native Lands County Park.
• We worked with regional, state, and national partners to transfer over 2000 acres of utility lands along the river to public and non-profit groups for long-term stewardship and community recreation.
• We helped facilitate preservation of Camp Security, a nationally significant Revolutionary War prison camp site at the headwaters of Kreutz Creek, a tributary of the Susquehanna.
