Friends of the Library groups play a key role in the success of a library. Friends groups are non-profit organizations made up of library lovers who want to help raise money so the library can continue to provide programs for all ages and help make big purchases needed for the library that they wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford on their own.
The Friends of Guthrie Memorial Library has a long history here in Hanover. In 1936, a group called the Library Guild was organized. The Library Guild helped the library by planning and organizing events to raise funding. In 1959, the Library Guild was reorganized into the Friends of the Library we know today with Grover Gouker Jr. being the first president of the organization.
Guthrie Memorial Library only receives about a third of its annual operating costs from the Borough of Hanover, and that budget includes no money at all for the educational and recreational programs that we provide, such as book clubs, children's storytimes, and seminars on workshops on topics like how to start your own business, financial literacy, and health and wellness. All of that funding comes from the Friends of the Guthrie Memorial Library, who rely on private donations from our generous community supporters. Giving Days like today are so vital for our organization and the community. Thank you for taking the time to visit our page and read our story.
Every dollar raised during Give Local York goes directly to supporting the Guthrie Memorial Library's vision of connecting Hanover area residents to the information they need in order to help them live their best lives.

The Friends of The Library raise funds to support Guthrie Memorial Library. These donations help Guthrie provide programs for Adults, Children, and Teens throughout our community. Guthrie Library has received Gold Star Status in the PA Forward Star Program for hosting programs that promote the 5 areas of literacy; Basic Literacy, Civic-Social Literacy, Financial Literacy, Health Literacy, and Information Literacy.
