This June marks five years. Five years since I lost my mom. Five years since the beginning of the worst depressive episode of my life. And five years since my diagnosis of bipolar disorder.
In June 2019, my mom took her own life after struggling with a host of physical health issues, alongside consistently wavering mental health. I had known for a long time that my mental health was far from perfect, but the profound loss of my mother—gone from the world before I was even old enough to step foot into a bar—sent me spiraling. I made my acquaintance with the ever-tightening, suffocating grasp of depression that wanted nothing more than to pull me down with it. Being faced with the mortality of the most important person in my life head-on made me question the validity of my own. I mean, if my mom couldn’t get through, why would I want to be here without her? Those thoughts continued to pile up until I was having multiple panic attacks a day and struggling with thoughts of ending my own life.. That’s where NAMI York Adams comes in.
I learned about NAMIYA through a class at my college and reached out to them. I didn’t know where else to turn; I had tried to make appointments with therapists and psychiatrists, but all of those returned wait times of multiple months. NAMI was able to provide me with not only a support group of people who understood where I was coming from and could validate my emotions and struggles, but also with a few different courses I could take to enlighten myself on what was happening and how to take care of myself. They enabled me to care for myself in a way I didn’t ever think I would be able to again, which led to me being able to eventually receive a bipolar diagnosis. I firmly believe that it is because of NAMIYA that I’m able to function today and continue to carry my mom’s legacy in my heart.
