“Our family experienced a profound outpouring of kindness and generosity at a stressful time. We knew this was the place where our sister should be and deserved to be - surrounded by love and support in her final days on Earth. We knew in our heart that we had brought her home. Our sister experienced a mindful, dignified, and compassionate way of dying. Pappus House brought our family peace and healing.”  - Robin and Karen

As York County's only home for end-of-life care, we are dedicated to those in need of a safe, peaceful, dignified home to receive hospice services.

“Every day I miss her but know she is at peace. I think and smile as I was given a wonderful gift to just be her daughter again for a while.” - Tammy

It is our privilege to deliver care that is genuinely centered around the needs and wishes of each individual we serve. Knowing what our residents value most is at the forefront of each day. Whether it is celebrating a birthday, a special holiday, or a visit with a cherished pet – we recognize the importance of this treasured time.

“They not only cared for my mom, but they took care of all our needs. My family will forever be indebted to Pappus House and their selfless staff. The community is blessed to have Pappus House.” - Mike

Many families who contact Pappus House would not otherwise have the continuous care needed during their loved one's journey. Often medical costs have exhausted their savings.  While we do respectfully ask residents to contribute towards their care, no one is denied admission due to their financial circumstance, thus removing the barrier of cost. Your generosity enables us to provide care when it is needed most, helping families find comfort and peace.

Often overlooked are the immense caregiving demands placed on family members when a loved one enters hospice care, as needs significantly increase during the final weeks of life. This can lead to missed days or even weeks of work, physical strain and injury from lifting and supporting the frail patient, as well as emotional stress and exhaustion. At Pappus House, our care team becomes extended family who carefully and continuously address each resident's unique needs.

Family, friends, and pets can visit their loved one at any hour and are welcome to spend the night. Our tranquil atmosphere helps ease the stress and anxiety that families might feel in a more clinical, bustling institution that had limited space for families to gather. The supportive presence of our staff and volunteers helps families, especially those with visiting children, find comfort during a difficult time. Our nurturing environment allows for meaningful interactions, heartfelt moments, and the creation of positive memories.

“The respectfulness, gentleness, and compassion were beyond anything I could have imagined. The peace of mind you provided to me and my family made our grief bearable.” - Joan

Your gift today will be put to work immediately – helping the next family in need and providing a home where they can live each moment surrounded by compassion and love.

OUR NAME

The milkweed plant, our logo, is the food source of the butterfly, a universal symbol of hospice care. Just like the seasons of life, the milkweed goes through stages of growth and transformation. In the late fall, the milkweed pod releases its seeds, carried by the silky white filaments called PAPPUS. With the help of the wind, the pappus delivers the seeds to new destinations and new beginnings.

Mission

Pappus House is York County's only home for compassionate end-of-life care.

Our home is dedicated exclusively to the needs of people with a terminal illness who are unable, or do not wish, to die in their own home. Specially trained staff and volunteers become extended family, providing continuous care in careful coordination with the family’s chosen hospice provider. Our mission’s collaborative approach and seamless coordination of services alleviates the physical and emotional care-giving burden on the family. This allows them to reclaim their role as spouse, child, parent or friend, enabling them to be present in the moment, to celebrate life, and to begin a healthy grief journey.

Grown from of many years of careful planning, Pappus House opened its doors in December 2017 to its first resident and his family and friends. From that first night of care, the precedent was set for what would become a highly sought-after unparalleled level of care.

Pappus House is a community-supported HOME - not an institution or medical facility - not government or insurance funded. As such it is uniquely able to provide loving comfort for loved ones near the end of life's journey. Although a small fee is requested, no one is ever turned away due to financial ability – the guiding principle is to help those in need.

The cost to provide round-the-clock care is $500 per resident, per day. Each gift is critical to continue this mission. We humbly ask for your generous support and help to provide the dignity and grace our loved ones deserve!

Our NEW DESTINATION and Future Plans:

Pappus House consistently operates at full capacity in our modest 3-bedroom home, we maintain a waiting list, and receives daily inquiries from families hoping and praying for help. Through generous community support, the next step towards our future vision has begun! A new property in Thomasville was recently purchased that will enable Pappus House to expand to 8 bedrooms, serving many more families.
