$25,000 Goal

"We teach literacy skills in English to empower adults for successful engagement in the home, workplace, and community."

That has been York Literacy Institute's (formerly York County Literacy Council) mission since 1976. We offer literacy services necessary for an estimated 40,000 functionally illiterate adults in York County to become active and self-sufficient members in our community.

The Literacy Council equips adult learners with the training and tools necessary to achieve educational and personal goals, including:

  • Adult Education Program assists English-speaking adults (18 yrs and older) with improving their reading, writing, spelling, math, computer, and study skills.
  • High School Equivalency Program instructors prepare students to succeed in taking the HISET® or GED® exams through in-person or Zoom classes to earn their High School Equivalency diploma.
  • English as a Second Language (ESL) Program serves diverse members of the York community, with an average of 60 countries represented in the ESL Program each year.
  • ESL Civics Classes provide insight into life in the USA and help students prepare for the Naturalization Interview and Test to become citizens.
  • Digital Literacy Instruction offers any York County resident education for computer and technology skills that are a crucial part of finding employment, performing in the workplace, and finding career success.

York Literacy Institute supports York County by transforming lives. Adults gain the skills to improve job performance, increase job opportunities and income generation. Parents gain the knowledge to better support their children’s success in school. A well-prepared diverse workforce supports the success of the York County Economy.

In our 50h year of service, we have helped countless individuals in our community. Last year, we served more than 1,300 students and partnered with several organizations to offer classes at locations across York County.

Thanks to supporters like you, students and their families are able to overcome barriers to reach their dreams.

Mission

York County Literacy Council's mission is to teach literacy skills, in English, to empower adults for successful engagement in the home, workplace, and community.

York County Literacy provides classes for adults in York County, who are not able to read, write, perform basic math functions, speak and comprehend English. Instruction ranges from pre-literate to preparing to pass GED/HiSet® exam and for those seeking to earn their High School Equivalency credential in the state of Pennsylvania. Health literacy, computer literacy, financial literacy and workplace literacy are also taught in classes and through workshops.

When our neighbors learn how to read and write in English, do basic math, and develop soft skills, they have the power to lift themselves out of poverty, obtain and maintain employment, reduce or leave public assistance and ultimately change their lives. Help us invest in their future, so they can invest in our community.
