Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation – Give Hope, Give Wild, Give Extra

Every day at Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation, tiny lives arrive on our doorstep in need of urgent, specialized care; squirrels orphaned after storms, opossums found alone and confused, young groundhogs displaced by development, and dozens of other small mammals who can’t survive without human help.

Our mission is simple: give them a second chance.

Our work is anything but simple: around-the-clock feedings, medical stabilization, species-specific diets, enrichment builds, behavioral development, safe outdoor pre-release housing, and ultimately, the joy of returning them to the wild where they belong.

This year, our fundraising goal is focused on expanding capacity, strengthening medical care, and supporting the next generation of wildlife stewards. Funds raised help us:

• Provide lifesaving treatment and formula for injured and orphaned babies

• Maintain and improve our new commercial rehabilitation facility

• Build and upgrade outdoor enclosures for species like groundhogs, rabbits, flying squirrels, and opossums

• Supply enrichment, nutrition, heating, and specialized equipment

• Train volunteers, interns, and future wildlife professionals

• Offer free community outreach that teaches coexistence and compassion

When you donate, you're not just giving money, you're giving shelter, safety, hope, and a wild future.

Let’s Give Hope. Let’s Give Wild. Let’s Give EXTRA.

What is one animal at Acorn Acres whose story touched your heart and why?

There are so many! However, right now, I would have to say San San stands out the most. She has faced so many challenges in her life. After being confiscated from her loving family of 7 years for being an illegal pet, we nearly lost her because she wasn’t eating due to dental issues. Most recently, she underwent one of two surgeries to remove a tumor and help her breathe better. She’s just so happy and thriving, and her love for us is evident. You can truly see her excitement and appreciation every day.

How has volunteering or supporting Acorn Acres changed the way you see wildlife and our community?

Each animal has a unique story, and understanding their behavior has deepened my respect for their lives. Witnessing the rehabilitation process and the joy of releasing a healed animal back into the wild has shown me the importance of conservation efforts.  It has inspired me to advocate for wildlife protection and educate others about the importance of preserving our natural world

What do you wish more people understood about wildlife rehabilitation?

While we celebrate the successes and the joy of releasing a healed animal back into the wild, the losses also weigh heavily on us. Seeing an animal that you’ve cared for struggle, despite your best efforts, can be heartbreaking. More awareness about these challenges would foster greater compassion and support for the work we do. Understanding the emotional toll of rehabilitation could encourage people to get involved, whether through volunteering, donations, or simply spreading the word about the importance of wildlife care.

Why are you choosing to give extra this year and what difference do you hope your support will make?

I’m choosing to give extra this year because I want others to recognize the impact of our efforts in helping wildlife. I hope that the funds we raise will allow us to serve a larger number of animals and expand our reach.
