Q. If I have questions, who can I contact?

Please reach out to the GiveGab Customer Success team at support@givegab.com or through the chat bubble in the bottom right-hand corner of the Give Local York website and they will be able to assist you with almost anything you might need, or get you in touch with the right person!


Q. What is Give Local York?

Give Local York is a 24-hour giving day, hosted by the White Rose Leadership Institute in partnership with United Way of York County, presented by GIANT Food Stores, supporting nonprofits and growing philanthropy in York County, PA. Donors can give online at www.givelocalyork.org or in to their favorite nonprofit on May 1, 2020.


Q. Is there an easy printable list of all participating nonprofits?

A printable list of nonprofits will be made available once 2020 registration has ended on March 27, 2020. You can view last year's participants here.


Q. When is Give Local York?

Give Local York will take place from 12am through 11:59:59pm on May 1, 2020.


Q. Are there any events taking place during Give Local York?

Yes! There are more than 50 events and activities taking place all day long all over York County. Check out our Events Page for all event details.

Give Local York will culminate with the Big Give Party at the Valencia Ballroom in Downtown York. The party is free and open to all. More details to follow.


Q. Who can donate during Give Local York?

Anyone may donate to one or more organizations participating in Give Local York!


Q. What forms of donations are accepted?

MasterCard, Visa, Discover and American Express donations received through www.givelocalyork.org. The minimum credit card donation is $10 and there is no maximum. You can also make a donation directly from your bank account using Plaid through www.givelocalyork.org with a donation minimum of $100. You can learn more about using your bank account for your donation by viewing this article.

In-person donations (cash or check) can be made to the organizations of your choice by coordinating directly with those organizations. Participating nonprofits will then be able to enter your in-person gift as an “offline” gift into www.givelocalyork.org to receive “credit” toward their campaign.

You can also give the gift of your time and talents! Find volunteer roles that organizations are looking to fill on our Volunteer Opportunities Page or on each organization's profile page (if they're looking for volunteers!).


Q. What is the minimum donation amount?

The minimum donation amount is $10 for a credit card donation and $100 for an ACH (automated clearing house) transfer. There is no maximum.


Q. Can I make donations via a mobile device?

Yes! Simply visit www.givelocalyork.org on your mobile device.


Q. Can I give to more than one organization at one time?

Yes! You can give to multiple organizations at one time by using the multi-give feature. Learn more about the gift basket here! You may also choose to give to the Give Local York Stretch Pool and have your gift support ALL participating organizations!

When giving to multiple organizations, your credit card will be charged for each donation and you will receive emailed receipts from each organization you made donations to!


Q. Can I preview how to make a gift through Give Local York online?

While you won't be able to preview the donation process for Give Local York before May 1, this video will walk you through how to make a gift and all of the options available to you to!


Q. Can I make my donation anonymously?

Yes! You can make your donation anonymously. When choosing to make your gift anonymously, you have three options:

  1. Please do not display my name publicly
    This option will display "Anonymous" in place of your name on the organization's page and on the Give Local York website. The amount donated will still be displayed publicly, for example, "Anonymous $50".
  2. Please do not display my amount publicly
    This option will remove the donation amount from the donor wall on the organization's page and on the Give Local York website. The donor name will still be displayed publicly, for example, "Jane Smith".
  3. Please do not display my name or my amount publicly
    You can choose both options to hide your name and the amount donated. In doing so, there will be no public recognition of your gift on the Give Local York website. Both your name and your amount donated will be hidden.
  4. Hide my name from this organization and the public
    Your donor information will be hidden from both the public and the nonprofit. Only Give Local York County will receive your information, which will remain confidential.

For option 1-3, organizations will still have full access to your name, amount donated, email address, and other contact information.

If you forgot to select the "Please make my donation anonymous" option, please reach out to the GiveGab Customer Success team at support@givegab.com or through the chat bubble in the bottom right-hand corner of the Give Local York website and they will be able to assist you.


Q. Are donations tax-deductible?

Donations through the Give Local York website and in-person donations made directly to nonprofit organizations are tax-deductible as allowed by law. Consult with your tax and financial advisors regarding your tax benefits for charitable gifts.

Online contributions may be made via credit card, debit card, and only. Donations will be processed and receipted by GiveGab. Your tax receipt will indicate a donation has been made to Give Local York, but your actual donation will go to the nonprofit of your choosing. The receipt will be emailed to you at the address you provide when making the donation. You should print or save this receipt for your records.


Q. Will I receive a tax-deductible receipt for my donation?

Yes! Immediately after you make your donation, you will receive a thank you email and a tax-deductible receipt. If you gave to multiple organizations, you will receive an email for each individual donation.

Your tax receipt will indicate a donation has been made to Give Local York, but your actual donation will go to the nonprofit of your choosing. You should print or save this receipt for your records.

If you did not receive your thank you and tax-deductible receipt email, please contact GiveGab Customer Success at support@givegab.com or through the chat bubble in the bottom right-hand corner of the Give Local York website and they will email you another one.


Q. What if a mistake was made—can I secure a refund?

Refunds are possible if you enter an unintended amount, direct your donation to the wrong nonprofit, or for similar issues. We encourage you to carefully review the information you enter when making a donation to ensure its accuracy.


Q. How much of my donation goes to the nonprofit?

GiveGab retains a 3% campaign management fee from all credit card donations on Give Day, capped at $20 per donation. Credit Card processing fees are an additional 2.2% + $0.30 for (MasterCard, Visa, Discover, and American Express).

Donors can also donate on Give Day via an ACH transfer. The minimum amount for an ACH gift is $100 and there is the 3% campaign management fee and a flat $3 bank processing fee per transaction, no matter the donation size.

Please note that the White Rose Leadership Institute does not charge any fee for providing Give Local to the community and will not keep any portion of donors’ Give Local York gifts.

You are given the option to cover the fees and if you choose this option, 100% of your online charitable gift will go to the receiving organization. There are no fees for in-person donations made by check or cash. All donations are final.


Q. What portion of a donation made on GiveGab is tax deductible?

GiveGab offers the option for donors to increase the amount they give in order to “cover the fees” associated with their gift. Even when a donor decides to cover the fees, the entire amount is still tax-deductible as allowed by law. Donors will see the total amount they give to each organization reflected in their tax-deductible donation letter. The tax-deductible amount in the letter will include any additional contribution they have made to cover the fees.


Q. What nonprofits can participate in Give Local York?

To participate in Give Local York, an organization must be a 501(c)(3) public charity that is subclassified as 509a1, 509a2, or 509a3 (Type 1, Type 2, or Type 3 Functionally Integrated supporting organization) whose work benefits York County, PA. There are no restrictions based on organization size or location; however, an organization’s work must serve residents of York County, PA.

Nonprofits that participate in Give Local York attest that they meet the preceding eligibility criteria. Information provided by organizations during the application process was verified using Guidestar. GiveGab also vetted organizations to verify nonprofit status.


Q. May I designate how a nonprofit uses my gift?

Give Local York donations are considered unrestricted gifts to the nonprofit. Some nonprofits may have specified programs or projects that will receive their Give Local York funds. You may express a desire that your gift be used for a specific program or project, but it is the responsibility of the nonprofit to follow that instruction, not the responsibility of Give Local York.


Q. How do the Stretch Pool and Prizes work?

Stretch Pool Funds: The Stretch Pool is a bonus pool of funds has been raised from Community Partners. This bonus allows you to leverage additional dollars when you donate during Give Local York!

Stretch Pool funds will be shared by all participating nonprofits receiving donations during Give Local York. The amount received will be proportional to each organization’s percentage of the total funds raised during the event. For example, if an organization raises 2% of the total funds raised through Give Local, they will receive 2% of the available bonus funds. Stretch Pool funds are based on gifts before fees are assessed. To prevent substantial donations from skewing the allocation of Stretch Pool funds, maximum donations of $10,000 per donor, per nonprofit organization will qualify for matching funds. If a gift larger than $10,000 is made, only the first $10,000 will be counted toward the Stretch Pool.

Prizes: Throughout Give Local, prizes will be awarded according to criteria to be announced on the Give Local website. Some prizes are competitive, while others are awarded randomly.


Q. When will organizations receive their Give Local York funds?

Organizations will receive all online donations, less any uncovered processing fees, within 3 business days via direct deposit as long as the organization’s bank routing and account information has been verified. GiveGab uses a PCI Level I compliant payment service to ensure that all financial data is secure. Offline/in-person gifts made directly to organizations remain in their possession.

Stretch pool and prize earnings will be sent to organizations via a check from Give Local York within 45 days of the event end.


Q. Are my donation transactions secure?

GiveGab has conducted many giving days for community foundations nation-wide and is the recognized technology leader for match fundraising initiatives of this type. Q. Who will receive my contact information?

The organization(s) you choose to support will have access to your name and email address. This information is used to send thank you messages, provide the option to receive future notifications, and to notify you of future activities. Give Local York will also receive your contact information since donations pass through Give Local York.

You have the option to make your donation anonymous. Organizations will still have access to your name and email address.


Q. Do I need to create an account with GiveGab?

No, you do not need to create an account to make a donation. The benefits of creating an account include having your tax receipts collected in one location, being able to track your donations, an ability to follow the charities you support, and the option to engage in future volunteering and donations with your favorite nonprofits. Your tax receipt is emailed immediately upon processing your donation and you should keep this receipt for your records.


Q. What if my preferred organization is not listed?

If an organization is not listed, that organization is not participating in Give Local York this year. You can directly contact the organization to make sure they are aware of Give Local York or you can send an email to meagan@givelocalyork.org to request that we contact them about participating in future events. Please note, organizations must be 501(c)3 nonprofits serving York County, PA to participate.


Q. Why is there a fee for organizations to participate in Give Local York?

Unlike Give Days in other communities, Give Local York is a grassroots event, held for nonprofits by nonprofits. This fee helps to support the efforts required to conduct a community-wide event of this scale, including: the superior user experience provided on the GiveGab platform; the toolkit and training opportunities; securing sponsorships that fund our stretch pool and prizes; providing extensive media exposure; and supporting the Big Give Celebration. Funds raised by registration fees go directly into event production and support and make Give Local York possible.


Q. How do you anticipate this will affect nonprofit development throughout the 2020 year?

Research exists from other Give Day communities that show Give Days increase philanthropy throughout the year, so we don’t anticipate that this will be a case where donors give on May 1 and never again. Additionally, the new donors you receive on Give Day are yours for cultivation and continuing that relationship. It’s also entirely up to your organization if Give Day will just be another tool in your fundraising belt, or if you choose to put all of your eggs in the Give Local basket. This event will really be what your organization makes of it.
